CACTUS PAINTINGS | 2020 – Present

A cactus is a desert rose.

Matshona Dhliwayo

It’s a simple strategy, really: do as much as you can in as many ways as you must, and do it all well. If it seems to others as if you are several artists, you know you’re not; if it seems to you yourself as if you are producing several discrete bodies of artwork, produce each body coherently. The connections between the oeuvres may or may not be apparent, even to yourself, but you must trust that your sensibility will guide them all as long as you explore each thoroughly and fabricate each expertly. Victor Hugo Zayas is driven by his multiple virtuosity, but he steers each virtue in its way.
